The Free Protestant Episcopal Church
Worldwide Communion
(FPEC-WC)
The Worldwide Communion of the Free Protestant Episcopal Church (FPEC-WC) is a fraternal family of free Anglican and Episcopal churches, united by the heritage and ethos of the English Reformation and committed to a contemporary, inclusive and progressive expression of the Christian faith.
The Communion comprises autonomous and self-governing churches, as well as families of churches, congregations, chaplaincies, parishes and missionary communities in different parts of the world. Each community is responsible for its own life, ministry and property. There is no central headquarters responsible for holding the property of member churches; property belongs to the local communities themselves, in accordance with their autonomy and applicable law.
This form of organisation enables the Communion to embrace both established churches and small congregations, family churches, groups and missionary and evangelistic initiatives, without their size or local structure being an obstacle to full participation in the fellowship of the Communion.
The FPEC-WC values an understanding of Anglicanism rooted in the English Reformation, seeking to preserve its Protestant and Episcopal identity in the face of the rise of Anglo-Catholicism in the nineteenth century. Theologically, it draws upon the tradition of the Via Media, seeking a balanced expression of the Christian faith between different traditions of the Reformation, particularly the Lutheran and Calvinist traditions.
Its doctrinal identity is expressed through the 35 Articles of Religion, a contemporary and contextualised re-reading of the tradition of the 39 Articles of Religion of the Church of England, seeking to address the questions and challenges of the modern world without abandoning the historic foundations of the faith.
The Communion brings together Christians and communities with different expressions of spirituality and worship, including Liturgical and Sacramental (High Church), Evangelical (Low Church), Broad Church and Charismatic traditions. This diversity is understood as a richness of Anglican life rather than an obstacle to unity.
The unity of the FPEC-WC does not depend upon uniformity. Its member churches remain free and autonomous, whilst sharing fellowship through a common faith, Episcopal fellowship, worship, mission and a common commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Archbishop Primus serves as a point of reference and ministry of unity within the Communion, fostering fellowship and co-operation among its churches.
On 10 March 2025, with the assumption of office of the Most Reverend Ricardo Lorite de Lima as Archbishop Primus, the present name Free Protestant Episcopal of England – Worldwide Communion (FPEC-WC) was adopted, more clearly expressing its reality as an international communion of churches.
Today, the FPEC-WC seeks to be a living expression of reconciliation and Anglican unity, bringing together diverse communities around a common vision: to preserve the heritage of the English Reformation, to live out the Christian faith in the present age, and to proclaim the Gospel with freedom, hope, love and commitment to the world.
All are welcome to learn more about this Communion of churches and its mission.
"The love of Christ is the bond that unites this Communion."
